The MG Windsor EV has finally been launched in India and a comparison with its sibling, the ZS EV, is warranted

The MG Windsor EV and ZS EV comparison in terms of specs, prices, features, design, etc., is going to be quite exciting. MG is in the process of expanding its footprint in India. Apart from the new Windsor EV and the existing ZS EV, MG also offers the affordable Comet EV to Indian customers. That makes it a prominent brand when it comes to electric mobility in our market. Not just that, MG offers tons of products in various international markets. As a matter of fact, the Windsor EV is based on the Wuling Cloud EV which is on sale in many markets across South-East Asia. For now, let us take a look at the salient features of the Windsor EV and ZS EV.

MG Windsor EV vs MG ZS EV – Prices

The MG Windsor EV has been priced quite creatively. The starting cost of the electric vehicle is Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom. MG is not charging the customers the price of the battery in the beginning. Instead, they are offering a plan under which you need to pay Rs 3.5 per km as the battery rental according to your usage. Add to that other running costs like maintenance, and the total comes out to be in the vicinity of Rs 5 per km. Under the MG’s eHUB program, public charging for the first year is free of cost. Apart from that, the MG e-Shield Package offers 3 years of unlimited warranty, 3 years of RSA and 3 years of Labour-free maintenance services. On the other hand, the MG ZS EV is available in the price range of Rs 18.98 lakh and Rs 25.44 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, the Windsor EV is bound to attract a whole bunch of new customers.

MG Windsor EV vs ZS EV – Specs

In terms of the specifications, the MG Windsor EV is available in a single battery pack option. It is a 38 kWh LFP battery with a Prismatic cell structure. It powers the electric motor to generate a decent 136 PS and 200 Nm of peak power and torque. With this relatively compact battery pack, the buyers get a claimed driving range of 331 km on a single charge. MG says that the efficient Battery Management System (BMS) ensures healthy performance of the battery even in harsh weather conditions. Therefore, the range should not vary too much because of the external temperature conditions.

On the other hand, the MG ZS EV is available with a 50.3 kWh battery pack. It powers the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Electric Motor which produces a respectable 177 PS and 280 Nm of peak power and torque. This enables a range of 461 km on a single charge. Using a 50 kW fast charger, the battery can be juiced up from 0 to 80% in just 60 minutes. With the regular 7.4 kW AC charger, it takes 8.5 hours to 9 hours to go from 0 to 100%.

MG Windsor EV vs ZS EV – Design

This is where these two electric cars from the Chinese-owned British carmaker differ significantly. Let us start with the latest product in the market. The Windsor EV certainly bears a unique appearance. At the front, it gets an LED light bar which runs the entire width of the front fascia and merges neatly into LED DRLs on either side. Apart from that, the lower section of the car holds the LED headlamps along with a striking silver skid plate section underneath the bumper. In fact, the lower section of the bumper looks quite beefy with the absence of a radiator grille. You can tell by glancing at the Windsor EV that it is an electric car.

Apart from that, the side section is relatively eventless. There are no overt curves and creases. Instead, one gets flush-fitting door handles, 18-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels and side body claddings to enforce an imposing and sporty stance. Apart from that, there are black side pillars and a chrome belt which covers the entire vehicle underneath the window frames. At the rear, it gets a connected LED taillamp cluster via an LED light bar. Even the bumper bears a sporty appearance. Overall, the MG Windsor EV is unlike any other car out there.

On the other hand, the MG ZS EV looks more like a traditional mid-size SUV. This includes sleek boomerang-shaped LED DRLs which are integrated inside the LED headlamp cluster, a large sealed area with contours where you would ordinarily find a radiator grille in ICE cars. I like the lower section of the front bumper with a unique design pattern. On the sides, the ZS EV gets roof rails, stylish alloy wheels, black side pillars and prominent wheel arches along with rugged side body cladding. The rear section incorporates split-LED lighting with a sporty bumper and a cool skid plate section. There is even a compact shark fin antenna. All in all, the MG ZS EV looks decent.

Our View

You might be a bit confused about choosing the right option between these two MG products. The main reason for that is the efforts you need to make to calculate the actual running costs of the Windsor EV. Apart from that, both cars are well-equipped with the latest amenities. However, only the ZS EV gets Level 2 ADAS. Hence, if you prefer such active safety functions and have a flexible budget, opting for the ZS EV makes sense. But if you are on a tight budget but still want the latest tech and convenience functions, the Windsor EV is a great option.
