Mahindra and Tata Motors are the two homegrown giants of the Indian automobile industry
For the month of September 2024, Mahindra ended up beating Tata Motors by a significant margin on the monthly sales. In the last few years, Mahindra and Tata Motors have been immensely successful in the passenger vehicle segment in India. The two homegrown automakers were initially known for making industrial equipment and commercial vehicles. However, due to their consistency and dedication, they have tasted incredible success in the mass market for passenger vehicles as well. Let us take a look at the details of this latest case.
Mahindra Outsells Tata Motors in September
Last month, Mahindra recorded sales of a jaw-dropping 52,062 units. Note that these are for the domestic market alone. In comparison to the same month last year, this number is a cool 24% higher (it was 41,267 units in September 2024). Also, selling over 50,000 cars in a month in India is not common for anyone other than Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. Additionally, the Indian SUV maker also sold 3,027 cars as exports in September 2024 in comparison to 2,419 units in September 2024. This marks a substantial 25% increase on a year-on-year basis.
On the other hand, Tata Motors was able to sell a decent 41,063 units of its products, including EVs, in September 2024 domestically. This is over 10,000 less than what Mahindra sold. Furthermore, this marks a decline of 8% on a year-on-year basis with 44,809 units sold back in September 2024. Hence, Tata Motors has lost quite some numbers on a yearly basis. Having said that, with the addition of new products like the Curvv, it will be interesting to see how the next couple of months turn out.
My View
While it might seem competitive from the outside, as Indians, it swells our chests with pride to see two indigenous carmakers striving to reach that second spot among the largest carmakers in the country. Over the years, both of them have transformed themselves so vigorously that they have become global brands in the passenger car segment. They were already renowned names in the commercial vehicle space across the globe. With their current breed of cars, they are already going places. I shall keep an eye out for how their journeys shape up in the future.
